May ‘Snice

04May10

After what felt like a long and relentless Winter, it is suddenly May. Here, in New York City, we kicked off the month with high temps, summer-like humidity, and plenty of sunshine. To end a whirlwind week at work, I got to go to a Friday night game at Yankee Stadium for the first time this season, where the Yanks beat the Chicago White Sox,6-4.

Following a great Yankee comeback and a much-needed good night’s sleep, I decided to check out a new vegetarian joint in the neighborhood, called ‘Snice. I dragged along one of my favorite vegans-by-association, Amy, who is always down for a new food adventure. Sometimes I secretly hope that I will convert her by feeding her delectable vegan treats.

From the vast and colorful chalkboard menu, it was difficult to decide what to have – everything sounded so yummy.

Decisions, decisions

Taking into account some recos from the friendly staff, we decided to go halfsies on two sandwiches: a smoked tempeh wrap and a “meatball” sub (with Daiya vegan cheese).

Of the two, my favorite was the meatball sub, because it was served warm, on a crusty baguette. I loved the smoked tempeh, but I thought it could be improved if it were grilled on the outside. The raw wrap was a little chewy for my liking.

Because we decided to eat in, we got fresh, colorful side salads with both sandwiches, for $8.75 each. We could just barely finish our meals, because the portion sizes were very generous and hearty.

Needing to grab a quick dinner prior to an evening meeting, I returned to ‘Snice tonight to try the seitan souvlaki, one of the other sandwiches that came highly recommended (and was DELISH). I should have kept my dinner plans under “wraps” (if you will), because a few moments after ordering, I caught Beth trying to sneak around my turf on her way back from Soul Cycle. Sneaky vegans. She got the smoked tempeh and a mango smoothie.

I am pretty sure I’ll be hitting this place at least a couple of times a week, with old friends and new. With so many fresh and tasty vegan options, ‘Snice is sure to become a neighborhood fave all year round.

Now, if they could only open a location in midtown, I’d be covered morning, noon, and night.

150 Sullivan (between Prince St. and Houston St.), SoHo
45 8th Avenue (at W. 4th St.), West Village
